Well, its happened again.
Sunday I went to the kitchen to start breakfast. I went back a while later and saw all this torn paper all over the floor. I'm think 'what??? I don't think this was here before', as I round the corner of the island following the paper trail, I see Lucy hunkered down with one of those super sticky mouse traps between her paws. She looks up at me all sheepishly because she really thinks she's in trouble for tearing stuff up. In fact she high tails it out the dog door and doesn't come back in until I drag her in telling her its ok and praising and petting her for getting the mouse. As I look at the paper in her paws, I see it.
The mouse.
Eeek.
Still barely alive, but clearly stuck to the paper, and a little bloody probably from the mauling of Lucy. Yuck.
I carry it outside, but its not dead yet. Double ick. I have to crush it with a heavy block. Ick. Even then its not dead, but I'm not doing this again. I figure its got to be past the point of return and it will pass on soon. I toss it in the trash can (outside) and go in to clean up the mess.
Later when Lucy does come back in, she goes to sniffing around, but I can tell she doesn't find anything. So fortunately we have no more mice, but she did find that one.
You may be wondering why I had mouse traps out. Truth is I just never got rid of them after we had the huge rodent. I'm not sure where this one came from, I think it may have been in the pantry (the door was open, and the paper trail started near it). So maybe the mouse got stuck on the sticky paper and she heard it squeaking and went it there and thought "cool, I hit the jackpot-live food!" ha ha, I don't know. But its gone now and she seems fine so I'm glad to say there are no more. (Hopefully no more ever again too-I hate uninvited things in my house-gives me the creeps-ick).
