I planted a garden for the first time ever this spring. I decided to do an above ground box garden to keep it small and manageable, plus I didn't want to dig up any of the sod that had finally grown into good grass in our yard. So I planted right on the property line of our yard to the side by the garages (and a water hose). I planted carrots, zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers, and one cabbage plant (T got at school), one tomato plant, and a small parsley plant and cilantro plant. When I bought the seeds, I didn't realize that my little plot was probably too small for all this food (in fact I never even planted the pumpkin seeds because the directions said they needed 15 FEET each in space (!) (I should plant them at the edge of the treeline but I haven't yet). Anyway, next year I'll either have to plant less or make it bigger because all the plants are very squished together.I can't BELIEVE how it has taken off! Here are a few pictures to show u the progress.

As u can see, maybe planting so much stuff in my little 4-8foot planters wasn't such a good idea. whoops. live and learn. The carrots aren't even getting any sunlight because the leaves from the zucchini and cabbage are overshadowing them!

some sort of bug is eating the cabbage leaves. any idea what it is? my father in law says I need that bug powder to kill it off, but I don't want to put chemicals on my food-isn't that why I'm growing it myself in the first place?! anyone have any non-chemical ideas to keep the bugs away?

Look , I've even got tomatoes already starting!
Oh, by the way, yesterday I finally went and got one of those cylinder shaped wire things to help hold the tomato plant up. Note to self, next year, install that BEFORE the plant grows so big I can barely get it in there!

P.S. My mom's husband (the herb guy) says to try "Safer Soap" on your plants. Here is the link http://www.planetnatural.com/site/insecticidal-soap.html
